Iran to Start Nuclear Enrichment Program
[ West alarmed as Iran steps up enrichment of uranium stocks ] - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today ordered Iran's atomic energy organisation to begin enriching its uranium stockpile to a higher level, further raising fears over the country's nuclear ambitions.
Ahmadinejad was shown on Iranian TV giving an order for the uranium, currently enriched to the level of 3.5%, to be further refined to 20% purity. State media said the work would start on Tuesday.
Iran said that it needs the more concentrated fuel for a research reactor in Tehran which makes isotopes for medical uses. However, western officials pointed out tonight that Iran does not possess
the specialised technology for turning the enriched uranium into the fuel rods used in the Tehran reactor. They are concerned that by enriching uranium to the level of 20%, the Islamic republic would learn how to overcome many of the technical obstacles to making weapons-grade fuel.
The percentage measures of enrichment refer to concentration of the most fissile isotope, U-235. A weapon small enough to.........

Peter Obi Holds Post-Election Press Conference
[ Peter Obi Holds Post-Election Press Conference ] - Nigeria: Ladies and Gentlemen - I am delighted to address you and indeed the entire world on the Gubernatorial election which was conducted in Anambra yesterday.
This election was unique in several respects: one, it was the only one that was conducted throughout Nigeria yesterday. Two, the entire world literally monitored it either directly or indirectly.
Thirdly, although the age-old inadequacies of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in terms of poor preparation, late arrival of electoral materials, etc, manifested, they were minimal.
However, in spite of the foregoing, vote-counting, collation and announcement of results were relatively transparent. I wish to commend the INEC, election observers and monitors in this
connection. For this singular reason also, I accept the........

Topless Women Protest Poll
[ Topless women protest poll ] - Ukraine: Four young women naked from the waist up barged into a Ukrainian polling station on Sunday and held a rowdy protest just before a candidate in the country's presidential
election cast his ballot there. The women, members of a small feminist group called Femen known for staging eye-catching protests, were hustled out of the Kiev polling station by security guards before Viktor Yanukovich

'Tehran logic Saddam-style'
[ 'Tehran logic Saddam-style' ] - Iran has an uncertain policy, similar to that of a reckless and violent boy. We are not saying this because Iran supports a number of destructive extremist groups, but due to its
overall policy, particularly its nuclear file. Iran has removed all the masks it used earlier to market this file as it needs more time to actualize its objectives known only to the evils in Tehran.
This file has proven to the whole world that Iran is not serious in its alleged plan to confront the international community regarding its nuclear program. This has put the country inside a circle of worries
and instability, posing a grave threat to the region. The entire world is now tired of the usual Iranian excuse - the so-called right to have nuclear power for peaceful purposes.
Iran tests missiles and other weapons daily, making it a 'center of threat' for various countries in the region. We should
not ignore the fact that Iran's neighbors have the right to.........

Britain For Zimbabwe IMF Voting Rights
[ Britain Says It Supports Restoration of Zimbabwe Voting Rights at IMF ] - The British Treasury said Friday that it supports the restoration of Zimbabwe's voting rights in the International Monetary Fund, following a recent statement from the United States that it would not opposed such a development.
The U.K. Treasury issued a statement saying the macroeconomic environment in Zimbabwe has improved under Finance Minister Tendai Biti, and that this was one of the factors contributing to its decision in the matter.
"The UK government also welcomes Zimbabwe's re-engagement with the IMF over the last year, which has underpinned economic reform in Zimbabwe," it said. "Support for restoration of
Zimbabwe's IMF voting rights is recognition of this progress, and forms part of Zimbabwe's re-engagement with international financial institutions," the Treasury said.

Iran Says U.S. Missiles Easily Defeated

The chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, General Hassan Firouzabadi, was quoted Thursday by Iranian state news as saying the Patriot missiles can be made ineffective through simple tactics.
Iran has accused the United States of trying to create divisions between Tehran and its Arab neighbors by deploying U.S. missile defense systems in Gulf nations.

Preparing Nigeria For Disintegration
[ Preparing Nigeria for disintegration ] - The unusual long absence of President Musa Yar'Adua from office owing to his ill health has revealed how shallow the socio-political foundation of Nigeria lies. It has also
abruptly unmasked the real enemies of the Nigerian nation. The actions and inactions of these anti-democratic elements have clearly turned Nigeria into a baobab tree standing on the edge of an erosion prone river.
Events following the official admission that President Yar'Adua was suffering from severe pericarditis and on admission at the King Faisal Hospital in Saudi Arabia has pointed to one ominous reality: The multi-faceted leadership institution in
Nigeria is unarguably not built on the pillars of justice, fair play, and the rule of law. As a result of this anomaly, tribal and religious sentiments now shape the opinions of government officials. Instead of nursing policies
that will unite and improve the lives of the citizenry, public servants now take pride in pursuing parochial tribal agendas. There is no gainsaying that the die hard attitude by some key government officials in ensuring that
President Yar'Adua does not hand over power temporarily to Vice President Jonathan is clearly.........

Irans Launches Rocket & Animals into Orbit
[ Iran rocket menagerie launched ] - Iran announced on Wednesday it has successfully launched a research rocket carrying a mouse, two turtles and worms into space - a feat President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
said showed Iran could defeat the West in the battle of technology.
Ahmadinejad also unveiled the model of a light booster rocket that is being built and three new, Iranian-built satellites, touted as the latest in the country's ambitious space programme.
The launch of the rocket Kavoshgar-3, which means Explorer-3 in Farsi, was announced by Defence Minister Gen Ahmad Vahidi to mark the National Day of Space Technology.
It comes a year after Iran sent its first domestically made telecommunications satellite, called
Omid, or Hope, into orbit for 40 days. The Iranian space programme has.........

Iraqi Court Allows Candidates With Baathist Ties
[ Iraqi Court Allows Candidates With Baathist Ties ] - An Iraqi appeals court overturns a move to disqualify some 500 candidates in next month's parliamentary elections because of their alleged ties to Saddam Hussein's
Baath Party. The controversy over the Baathists raises questions about who else is being allowed to run for office.
An Iraqi appeals court Wednesday overturned a move to disqualify some 500 candidates in next month's parliamentary elections because of their alleged ties to Saddam Hussein's Baath Party. The court
said that those on the banned list will be allowed to run in the election, but those who win seats will not be permitted to take office until their links to the former regime have been fully examined.
The controversy over the Baathists raises questions about who else is being allowed to run for office. Many in Iraq, especially Sunni Arabs, view the attempt to ban the
candidates as a way to keep new emerging powers from gaining.........

[ Nigerian police investigates al-Qaeda's comment on arms ] - The Nigeria Police Force has said they are probing a report credited to an al-Qaeda group in north Africa to train and arm Nigerian Muslim groups to fight perceived enemies in the country.
The al-Qaeda group in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said in a statement on Monday that it was ready to defend "our people in Nigeria."
Reacting to this, the police said its men were ready to counter any form of terror in the country.

[ US women sentenced in penis gluing case ] - USA: A woman who tied up a cheating lover and glued his penis to his stomach said Tuesday that she didn't mean to hurt him and only overreacted
because he was trying to contact her 12-year-old daughter. Therese A. Ziemann, 48, said she and three other women only meant to confront the married man about his cheating ways.
Her decision to grab the bottle of nail glue from her makeup bag was "a stupid spur-of-the-minute decision," she said. "I had just found my daughter's number in his cell phone," she said outside court.

Iran To Hang 9 More Protesters
[ Iran set to hang more opposition protesters ] - Iran said yesterday that it would soon hang nine more rioters over their roles in the unrest that erupted after June's presidential vote, prompting an opposition leader to say such repression showed the 1979 Islamic revolution had failed.
"Nine others will be hanged soon. The nine, and the two who were hanged on Thursday, were surely arrested in the recent riots and had links to anti-revolutionary groups," said senior judiciary official Ebrahim Raisi.
The two men hanged last week were among a group of 11 people sentenced to death on charges including "waging war against God" and being members of armed groups.
Opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, the former prime minister, said the repression showed the 1979 Islamic revolution that overthrew the US-backed Shah "had not achieved its goals".

Female Suicide Bomber Kills Many
[ Female suicide bomber kills 41 in Iraq ] - Iraq: A suicide bomber killed 41 people including children on Monday when she blew herself up among a crowd of pilgrims walking to a religious festival in Iraq.
The woman triggered an explosives belt at a rest station for the pilgrims, who were on their way to the holy Shia city of Karbala. There was a similar bomb attack last year at the same pilgrimage, which has been a regular target for attacks.
The rest station included a security search area, and the bomber had been ushered into the tent set aside for women when the device was set off.
"We were serving the people when the attack happened inside a search tent for women," Allawi Hassan, a staff member, told reporters.
"The moment the explosion happened I felt as if I was flying through the air. I saw men, women and children wounded before I fainted. I then found myself in hospital."
The dead are thought to include five women and six children. Al-Qaeda has admitted to being.........

'Issa Hayatou Got It Wrong'
[ CAF's Togo Ban: Issa Hayatou, you got it wrong! ] - On the 8th of January 2010, the Togolese national team - The Hawks - set out for Cabinda, Angola from the Congo to commence their campaign in the African Cup of Nations.
A brief domestic risk assesment of this strategy would show that it was fraught with danger. And it has proved to be a serious error of judgment.
The Cabinda region is almost totally engulfed by the two Congos on its northern, eastern and southern borders. It has the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The Congo had been particularly strife-ridden since the twilight days of the late
Mobutu Sese-Seko. By the time Laurent Desire Kabila (Kabila Snr) was head of state, six separate armed conflict were on-going in the Congo. Congolese rebels were challenging Kabila Snr (they are still challenging his son
Kabila Jnr); Rwanda had pushed the Interhamwe rebels deep into DRC territory and fighting was reported frequently; Uganda was fighting her rebels in the Congo; Sudan was doing the same; Burundian authorities and FFD rebels, Congo-Brazzaville and forces loyal to their deposed former President Lissouba; and between
the Angolan government and UNITA rebels. This conflict became known as........

Mugabe's Secret Airstrip
[ Secret airstrip built at Zimbabwe diamond field ] - A secret airstrip is being built in a diamond field illegally seized by the Zimbabwean army 14 months ago which would enable clandestine weapons shipments.
Diplomats and analysts believe that the mile-long runway is intended for arms shipments, probably from China, for which troops loyal to President Robert Mugabe would pay on the spot with gemstones from the Chiadzwa diamond mines.
Aerial pictures show construction work is well under way, with a newly built control tower apparently complete and the runway nearly ready for surfacing.
There are other airfields within a short distance of the mining area, and no obvious need for a runway long enough for transport planes to take off and land even closer to the mines. A Western diplomat said the existence of the runway, out of sight except from the air, was "extremely" worrying.
The images also show what appears to be a tented army camp in the diamond fields, which would be in violation of Zimbabwean court orders and of an undertaking to the Kimberley Process, which was set up to prevent "blood diamonds" from conflict zones entering the global gem trade.
According to human rights groups, hundreds of independent miners were killed when soldiers seized........
