      New Nigeria Massacre Fears
[ New massacre fears as 500 die in Nigeria ] - Christian villagers in Nigeria fled their homes following threats of new attacks in the aftermath of a massacre, despite the presence on Tuesday of troops designed to restore calm to the region. As mass burials for some of the 500 victims of an orgy of violence took place near the city of Jos, condemnation poured in from world leaders and Acting President Goodluck Jonathan sacked his chief security adviser. But observers warned that the government must tackle deep-rooted poverty in order to combat the underlying causes of the ethnic tensions which have seen thousands killed in the region in recent years. While troops patrolled the three villages where members of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group embarked on their killing spree, residents of neighbouring villages said they had already received new threats. With a six-month-old baby strapped to her back, Patricia Silas, 30, and her two neighbours turned her ......... Click here to read full story.

Woman's Gout Turns Out To Be Child
[ Mum's gout turned out to be baby ] - Stunned British woman Belinda Waite became a mother for the first time just three hours after doctors discovered she was pregnant. The Sun reported today the 21-year-old had been in and out of hospital for nine months after being told she was suffering from a severe case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and gout. It was only after she was admitted to hospital in agony on February 6 that doctors realised she was expecting. They told Belinda she was around three months pregnant and sent her back home to Bampton, Devon, just before midnight. But at 2.30am the following morning baby daughter Louise arrived weighing a healthy 8lb 14oz (5kgs) to the amazement of Belinda and partner Wayne Boyles, 28. Wayne's mum Sylvia helped with the unexpected arrival and hairdresser Belinda said she had......... Click here to read full story.

      Rwanda Leader 'To Be Exhumed'
[ First Rwanda leader Mbonyumutwa 'must be exhumed' ] - Rwandan officials have ordered the family of the country's first President, Dominique Mbonyumutwa, to exhume his remains. The mayor of Muhanga district has given the family 60 days to decide where they want him re-buried. Officials say they need the tomb moved to allow redevelopment. Mr Mbonyumutwa's family said the government order contravened an earlier court ruling, which instructed the government to take care of the tomb. Mr Mbonyumutwa became interim president in ........       Iraqi Election Rivals Claim Success
[ Iraqi election rivals claim success after lower turnout ] - Sixty-two per cent of Iraqis voted in yesterday's general election, with both the conservative incumbent prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and his secular rival, Iyad Allawi, claiming today to have performed strongly in the poll. The turnout was lower than the reported 76% turnout in the 2005 poll, which was boycotted en masse by two provinces, but higher than in last year's provincial ballot, the electoral commission said. The lower nationwide tally this time seems to have been balanced by a higher than 50% turnout across all provinces, including the restive Sunni heartland. Preliminary results in the landmark poll are expected by Thursday, and several months of horse-trading to select a prime minister are expected to follow. The pre-poll frontrunners, Maliki and Allawi, were both talking up their performances, although neither man is likely to be able to form a government without entering into a coalition with at least one other rival. Officials in Maliki's heartland in the Shia south of Iraq said his......... Click here to read full story.

500 Butchered in Nigeria Killing Fields
[ 500 butchered in Nigeria killing fields ] - On the dusty streets of three Christian villages in northern Nigeria, dozens of bodies lined the streets yesterday. Other victims of the weekend's Muslim fury jammed a local morgue, the limbs of slaughtered children tangled in a grotesque mess. One toddler appeared fixed in the protective but hopeless embrace of an older child, possibly his brother. Another had been scalped. Most had severed hands and feet. Officials estimate that 500 people were massacred in night-time raids by rampaging Muslim gangs near the city of Jos, where the Christian-Muslim fault line cuts across Nigeria. Local journalists and civil rights organisations who toured the area yesterday told The Times they had counted at least 200 victims shot and hacked to death in apparent revenge for sectarian violence in January that claimed about 300 lives from the two communities. Mark Lipdo, a co-ordinator for the Stefanos Foundation, a Christian aid group, confirmed at least 93 dead in........ Click here to read full story.

Explosions Hit Iraq Ahead of Poll
[ Explosions hit Iraq ahead of poll ] - Separate explosions in southern Iraq have left at least three people dead and more than 50 others wounded a day before the country's parliamentary elections. Iraqi officials have assured voters that the country is ready for Sunday's poll, but security remained a concern for many Iraqis on Saturday. Al Jazeera's Omar Al Saleh, reporting from Iraq's southern Anbar province, said three loud explosions shook central Ramadi, the provincial capital, followed by a volley of bullets. "I spoke to two police sources, they gave two different accounts. The first said there were three mortar attacks near a polling station in central Ramadi. The report said one policeman was injured. "Another police source said there were three improvised explosive devices detonated under the supervision of police and there were no injuries there. "Security commanders said they are deploying more than 60,000 troops from the army and police and they said everything is under their control. "But the explosions will give a message to the people in Ramadi that this place is still dangerous." Earlier on Saturday, three people were killed and more than 50 injured in a........       Tear Gas Used on Togo Opposition
[ Togo police use tear gas on opposition protesters ] - Police in Togo have fired tear gas at supporters of the country's opposition presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Fabre, reports say. Togo's opposition is alleging fraud as partial results from Thursday's presidential election come in. With more than half of constituencies already declared, sitting President Faure Gnassingbe has a clear lead. Both Mr Gnassingbe and Mr Fabre have claimed victory, with Mr Fabre alleging irregularities in the vote counting. Counting has been delayed by a breakdown in the system transmitting figures from regions to the capital. And results already declared show Mr Gnassingbe, the incumbent, with a clear lead even in Lome, seen as an opposition stronghold. Mr Fabre said that a lack of adequate vote validation meant the count was now "illegal" and that "everything the electoral commission is doing is false". Earlier, Jean-Claude Codjo, an opposition member of Togo's electoral agency, walked out of.......... Click here to read full story.

      Gnassingbe 'Wins' Togo Election
[ Gnassingbe 'wins' Togo election ] - The president of Togo's election commission has declared the son of the late president as the winner of the presidential race with 60.9 per cent of the vote. Issifou Tabio said provisional results showed on Saturday that Faure Gnassingbe won 1.2 million votes of the two million votes cast. Opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre received 692,584 votes. The contentious election was the second since the death of Eyadema Gnassingbe. The family has ruled for 43 years. Earlier on Saturday police fired tear gas on some 200 protesters angry that the opposition party was trailing, Abalo Assih, a police spokesman, said. Tension rose in Lome, the capital of Togo, as the nation awaited the release of the final results of Thursday's poll. In a statement broadcast on state television, the independent electoral commission urged candidates and voters to "exercise patience and serenity while the commission makes every effort to centralize the results from various polling stations". The race pitted six opposition candidates against Gnassingbe, 43, who came to power in 2005 after the ........ Click here to read full story.

      Egypt President Surgery Successful
[ Egypt president surgery successful ] - Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's president, has successfully undergone a gall bladder operation in Germany. Annette Tuffs, a spokeswoman for the Heidelberg University Hospital, where Mubrark was being treated said that the operation "went well". Ahead of the operation, Mubarak issued a decree temporarily handing power to Ahmed Nazif, Egypt's prime minister, until he was ready to resume his responsibilities. Mena, Egypt's state news agency said the president was in the hospital's intensive care unit where he was speaking with family members and his medical team. It had reported days earlier that Mubarak was suffering from "chronic infections in the gallbladder". The report was unusual as discussion of the president's health is usually a..........       Lost Jewish Tribe Found in Africa
[ Lost Jewish tribe 'found in Zimbabwe' ] - The Lemba people are easy to distinguish from most other Zimbabweans - they wear skull caps, pray in a language which is a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic, and put the Star of David on their gravestones. Their oral traditions claim that their ancestors were Jews who fled the Holy Land about 2,500 years ago. It may sound like another myth of a lost tribe of Israel, but British scientists have carried out DNA tests which confirm their Semitic origin. These tests back up the group's belief that a group of perhaps seven men married African women and settled on the continent. And they also have a prized religious artefact that they say connects them to their Jewish ancestry - a replica of the Biblical Ark of the Covenant known as the ngoma lungundu, meaning "the drum that thunders". The object went on display recently at a Harare museum to much fanfare, and instilled pride in........ Click here to read full story.

      President Zuma Meets The Queen
[ President Zuma chooses a wife to meet the Queen ] - For hundreds of years, world leaders have agonised over etiquette at state banquets with the Queen. The President of South Africa also faced a more personal dilemma: which wife should I take? Jacob Zuma has opted for novelty and he arrived in London today with his fifth and most recent wife Thobeka Madiba. Mr Zuma, thought to be the father of 20 children, has three current First Ladies, the latest of whom he married in January. "This is almost a honeymoon for her. They did not have time for one in January so he's decided to take her to London with him," said Jonathan Clayton, Africa Correspondent for The Times. Multiple marriages are legal in South Africa and form a part of Zulu culture, the largest tribal group in the country. However, a series of scandals and a rape allegation have dented the credibility of Mr Zuma's unusual lovelife. "Some South Africans are embarrassed by the President's domestic arrangements but he has said that he would choose between his wives for different duties on merit," Clayton said. "His first wife is relatively elderly and unlikely to enjoy long-distance travel, while there's a feeling that the second wife is annoyed with the President after she failed to attend his recent wedding." One of his wives, Kate Mantsho, the mother of five of his children, committed suicide aged 44. Another wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, 60, the mother of four of his children, divorced him in 1998. She is now......... Click here to read full story.

      Man Admits Raping, Beating Stepson
[ Brookfield man admits raping, beating stepson, 8 ] - USA: Damion C. Wise still had no explanation for the beatings and emotional abuse he delivered to his 8-year-old stepson last summer at their Brookfield Township home, but he pleaded guilty Thursday to 10 offenses, including rape, for a prison sentence of 10 years to life. Diane Barber, an assistant county prosecutor, said Wise, 30, hit the boy in the head with a small wooden bat; raped him with a toothbrush; stomped on his chest, which broke a rib; choked him; and stuck his fingers in the boy's throat. "When we received the call from the Brookfield police in August of last year, even our most veteran caseworkers were aghast at the condition of the 8-year-old victim," Marcia Tiger, Trumbull County Children Services Board executive director, told the court before sentencing. Wise declined to explain his actions to Common Pleas Judge Peter Kontos or to reporters while being led away to the county jail. Barber said prosecutors agreed to grant Wise a sentence of.........       Turai: Don't leave Aso Rock In Shame
[ Turai: Don't leave Aso Rock In Shame ] - Nigeria: It is said that those their gods kneaded Fufu for, should eat it in silence. Such could be said of the first family of this nation. Hence going by the array of contestants in the 2007 Presidential election Yar' Adua would not have been the best option. But for the entire wisdom of Obasanjo, PDP and some of their cohorts who made it possible for him to win the election. Well, everything surrounding the 2007 election is now history though Nigerians can never forget in a hurry. If not the ruse called 2007 Presidential election we would not have been in the mess we are today. President Yar' Adua mounted the saddle of leadership almost three years ago and since then he has been sick. It would be recalled that mid way into the 2007 Presidential election he broke down and was flown to Germany for medical attention which prompted the then President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to humorously ask "…….Umoru are you dead………?" but in all Yar Adua succeeded and has been piloting the affairs of this great nation as President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces until 23rd of November, 2009 when he was hurriedly sneaked out of the country on health grounds. Since then, things have......... Click here to read full story.

A Risk Society & The Nigerian Police
[ Extra Judicial killings: A Risk Society & The Nigerian Police ] - The video clips from Aljazeera TV now showing on YouTube ( http:www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlpZr81RucY ) has exposed how unarmed civilians were shot in the head and heart at pointblank by men of the Nigerian Police. These video clips has generated a lot of anger and shock from Nigerians and non Nigerians alike. The question of whether the poor and less privileged Nigerians are safe in the hand of security operatives especially the Nigerian Police Force is being critically examined by concerned Nigerians and Amnesty International. Is Nigeria a risk society as being portrayed by that shocking video footage? There are different types of risk; security risk, environmental risk, economic risk and social risk. Modern society have put in place institutions to deal with various risks. For example, the Central Bank or other relevant agencies has the responsibilities to avoid a country's economic risk while institution like the Nigerian Police Force or it counterparts across the globe is entrenched with the responsibilities to......... "Educated" to Feel Inferior: "Will Africa ever Catch Up?"

Dr. Bedford Nwabueze Umez In this paper, I will briefly explain the relationship between development and liberated mind. Specifically, I will explain (a) how most of us, the Africans, were "educated" to feel inferior, (b) the terrible consequences of inferiority complex, i.e., low self-esteem, in Africa, especially in Nigeria, and (c) then present the ONLY powerful solution to revert this inferiority complex so that Africa can meaningfully grow and develop.    More.....

    Quotes
"Let the guns implode, the wooden barrels decompose to fertilize a vibrant agriculture, and the metallic barrels and structures melted for industrialization. Let the ensuing abundance fill up the greedy and the rest of society for the complete healing of Africa."

    .......Chief Charles O. Okereke

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking form the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.

    .......Martin L. King Junior

It'll be the ballot or it'll be the bullet. It'll be liberty or it'll be death. And if your not ready to pay that price, don't use the word freedom in your vocabulary.

    .......Malcom X
