Onwuchekwa elected WIC chairman - Jude Smith, Masterweb Correspondent (Tuesday, September 6, 2005) Send Comments To Masterweb
Ichie Chibuzo Onwuchekwa emerged the new chairman of World Igbo Congress(WIC) at the conclusion of election by the Board of Directors at WIC Los Angeles 2005 convention. Immediately after the election a posting at WIC Forum by one Tony Egbe read; "A brand new WIC is Born, with Ichie Onwuchekwa in command. The onerous task is to get it to start walking, after years of crawling. Let us collectively make this new WIC to work per Igbo-centricity, with total inclusiveness, as its starting block." Preceding the convention Dr. A.O. Ejiofor wrote; "To all of those who profess love for Igbo nation, We have men and women who could take the WIC constitution and restructure it to be totally inclusive. Without this, we will ever provide a platform for grandstanding, which could be hi-jacked by vultures, who do not have the Igbo interest at heart." Onwuchekwa won the chairmanship by a land slide, with Joe Eto coming a distant second. Joe Nzepuome emerged vice president, Charles Chikezie, secretary-general and Anthony Ihunna PRO. The elections ushered in almost an entire new executive as all new faces replaced incumbents except one. Political heavyweights campaigned for a grassroot WIC executive, which pundits say they got at the Los Angeles election. The same political pundits are predicting with certainty the emergence of a WIC that would involve the ordinary Igbo man and cater for his needs. Is this a turning point in post-war Igbo history? Only time will tell. The politics of most Igbos after the end of the war could be simply described as 'money politics', where each politician goes after his/her selfish ends. This is not to say that there are no patriotic Igbo politicians, the fact is that the efforts of such people are negated by the former. Masterweb will arrange interviews with some principal officers of the new WIC executive, which will be brought to you as they are carried out.
