Lawyers: U.S. trying to "get rid" of Saddam - Aljazeera (Saturday, November 27, 2004)
Defense lawyers for Saddam Hussein said that leaked medical reports about the deteriorating health condition of the toppled Iraqi leader prove that the U.S. authorities and Iraq's interim government may try to "get rid" of him. "(We consider) the medical leaks attributed to the interim government about president Saddam Hussein's deteriorating health very serious," the spokesman for the Jordan-based team, Ziad Khassawneh, said. U.S. authorities have claimed that the toppled leader have received recent treatment for an enlarged prostate gland, hernia problems and eye trouble. "Such leaks are probably aimed at preparing Arab and international public opinion to accept any scenario by the Iraqi government and the U.S. forces for getting rid of Saddam," he said.
U.S. authorities have banned the legal team or other lawyers from seeing Saddam, who was captured in December 2003 and is being held in a U.S.-controlled prison.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has recently visited Saddam but officials have refused to provide any information about his health.
Khassawneh said that the ICRC reported that Saddam is "in good health and not suffering from any serious illness".
