Hai's wife had accused him of having affair with another woman. She waited until he went to bed before swinging into action, cutting-off his penis with a 20-centimeter knife. The jealous wife threw the severed piece into a drainage ditch near their home.

The discarded piece was found by Hai's friends and taken to the hospital four hours later. Doctors decided not to reattach it because it was dirty with mud and had not been properly preserved. Dr Huynh Truong, one of the doctors treating Hai said the remaining part of his penis would function.

Hai's wife had not been arrested by police at the time of this report. She is expected to be arrested after investigations by police, and could face a prison sentence of up to three years.
