Nwajagu removed from life support - Chief Charles O. Okereke, Masterweb (Wednesday, August 31, 2005) Send Comments To Masterweb
A prayer vigil was conducted Sunday, August 28, in the premises of the Riverside Police Dept. by Nigerians and well wishers. It was a huge turnout of Africans and Americans of all races, and was covered on three Los Angeles TV stations. Edward Izuchukwu Nwajagu was removed from life support the same day, after the vigil. The Holy Spirit at work through prayers, and for pagans it would also be a miracle. Nwajagu made a sudden recovery after the vigil and was aware of whoever came to see him thereafter. He was removed from life support at that point to the amazement of all. Events with respect to Nwajagu's medical condition and the vigil at the Police Dept. were analyzed and compared to determine a direct correlation of his sudden recovery and the vigil. Nwajagu opened and closed his eyes just as the vigil was winding down. He would open his eyes and stares at people visiting him. He would open his eyes and just roll them at times. Nwajagu is still unable to speak, but seems trying to do that. In general, the news is good for Ed, as his friends fondly call him. The Doctor who few days ago was talking of removing the Life support, is now talking of Rehabilitation. A bullet remains inside Nwajagu's head. Surgery would take place after Nwajagu is stabilized as it is too risky operating on him now. Okey Okonkwo, the friend Nwajagu had gone to Riverside to visit, said he was flabbergasted by the sequence of events that put his friend in the path of that bullet. "All they did is make a wrong turn to a gas station," Okonkwo said. "These guys came from a totally different world." When they heard the shots, he said, rather than take cover, Nwajagu stuck his head out the door. "He didn't know what it was." "I spoke to him the previous night," Okonkwo said. "Now he's laying in the hospital almost dead." Nwajagu had been in Los Angeles for a conference on helping young people back in Nigeria. He immigrated to the United States in the early '80s and settled in Oklahoma. He has a new wife in Nigeria whom he met on a trip back to his native country and an 18-year-old son from a previous marriage. Okey Okonkwo, said he knew there was gang violence, but he never thought his friends could be at risk. "I drive that way all the time," Okonkwo said. "It was terrifying." Masterweb would bring you more news updates on Nwajagu as they become available.
