Nigerian in Philippinno police trap for 419 - Gilbert Felongco ( Tuesday, July 18, 2006 ) Send Comments To Masterweb
A Nigerian man, who introduced himself as a "prince", was arrested by the authorities after a compatriot and three women accused him of defrauding them. Olarewaju Olajide, a student at the Virgen Milagrosa University in northern Philippines, was arrested recently by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) at his residence in suburban Caloocan City. "Olajide, who had introduced himself as a doctor and a prince through the internet, had promised marriage and a luxurious lifestyle to his victims," Nestor Mantaring, acting chief of the NBI told reporters. Mantaring said Olajide operates by befriending his victims. Once the suspect gains his victim's trust, he would propose marriage and promising a lifestyle of a princess in Nigeria. After a woman falls into his trap, the suspect would start borrowing money from her and then disappear. Olajide had also sweet-talked one of his victims, Julius Onyeugo a Filipino-American of Nigerian origin, into sending him a total of $8,700 (Dh31,929) in what turned out to be a scam. Last month, Olajide told Onyeugo that his nephew, Vincent Konjore, had been arrested by Philippine immigration authorities for possessing a fraudulent passport. The suspect reportedly asked for $4,500 (Dh16,515) to arrange for the release of Konjore. After Olajide asked for another $4,200, to be sent by wire, Onyeugo sensed something wrong and went to the Philippines to inquire. On receiving the complaint, the NIB laid a trap using marked currency bills and nabbed Olajide.
