Nigerian doctor jailed in the U.S. for 'slavery' - Masterweb News Desk ( Friday, April 21, 2006 ) - Send Comments -
A Nigerian-born doctor, Dr. Adaobi Stella Udeozor, a resident of Darnestown, Maryland, U.S.A. has been sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison and fined for keeping a domestic slave. She was ordered to pay restitution of $110,249 to her 23-year-old victim for her labor and would be deported after serving her prison term. Udeozor was convicted of conspiracy and harboring an alien for financial gain in 2004 by a federal court jury of nine women and three men. Her husband, George, evaded trial by fleeing to Nigeria, leaving her wife to face charges alone. The victim had been taken from her family in Nigeria in 1996 when she was 14 under the false belief that she was being adopted by the Udeozors and would attend school in the U.S., according to evidence presented in federal court. The girl was then smuggled into the United States by George using his own daughter’s American passport. In the United States, the victim was raped by George and abused by his wife, Dr. Udeozor, according to the victim and prosecutors. Dr. Udeozor operated the Optimum Care Medical Clinic, where she also used the victim for slave labor in addition to using her as nanny and domestic slave at home, according to court records. The Udeozors have six children. The unidentified victim was taken from the Udeozor home in 2001 after she reported the abusive behavior to the police.. The case was referred to the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement who arrested Dr. Udeozor at her home in 2004. On Tuesday at a U.S. federal court presided by US District Judge Peter J Messitte, the young victim said, "I want to make Stella pay the price for what she did to me." Stella Udeozor told the court she did nothing wrong. Judge Messitte disagreed with her, sentencing her to seven years and three months in federal prison. Messitte told her although she may come from a culture that allowed the kind of behavior for which she was convicted, there was no room for it in the U.S. George Udeozor has been arrested in Nigeria and is awaiting extradition. He is charged with rape in addition to the offenses that his wife was charged.
