Whistle blown on Nigerian bishop in Swaziland
*NERCHA says bishop misleading public - Nondumiso Dlamini, Swazi Observer ( Wednesday, March 22, 2006 ) - Send Comments -
Swaziland National Emergency Response Committee on HIV and AIDS(NERCHA) has expressed its disappointment regarding the people who claim to heal HIV and AIDS. This follows a statement made by a Nigerian Bishop Dr. CN Williams to the efferct that he can cure HIV and AIDS. He said Aids was not a disease but a curse. Williams, who is currently in the country, claims not only to heal every disease on earth, but to resurrect the dead as well. Nana Mdluli, NERCHA’s Public Relations Officer, who is very upset about the issue claiming it to be misleading the public said: “The thing is that people are desperate and pastors are taking advantage of this. Infected people will do anything to be healed,” She stated. Mdluli said pastors ought to use their powers and gift into making these people change their behaviour and take HIV and AIDS seriously. “If the Bishop believes that HIV and AIDS is a curse, it's fine as that is his own view about the pandemic as everyone is entitled to his or her own views,” she said. “I’m a Christian and I do not doubt the power of the Holy Spirit so it is possible for God to do this but what the public must bear in mind is that HIV and AIDS is there and it kills. We have seen most people dying from it everyday and it pains me to see that their number is increasing.” Mdluli added that it pained her as an HIV and AIDS activist to see pastors and bishops advertising such issues as more people were dying. She said the pastors were supposed to be the leaders and help these people and not deceive them. Mdluli said they were working on a campaign to stop most of these people from misleading the public and instead start working together as a team in preventing the virus and changing their behaviour. Phindile Weatherson, an HIV and AIDS activist, believes people are free to do as they will with their lives and that God heals people and has done so since the beginning of life. “What is impossible with man is possible with God, that is not to say everybody gets healed, that is God’s prerogative and I’m not qualified to answer why some people don’t get healed. However, since it is appointed for man to die thereafter judgment, we can’t fight death but HIV and AIDS yes, through faith, ARVs, and traditional healers. Weatherson stated that one does not have to be positive to be a HIV and AIDS activist. The Bishop, who is in the country to officially open a new centre for Straight Gate ministries, headed by Apostle Ken Lukumba and to preach the word of God, also claims to have healed some people in the country during his sermons in Manzini that were held at the Greater Alpha restaurant.
