Lutheran missionaries for Nigerian bible project - Press Release ( Friday, February 16, 2007 ) - Send Comments -
Paul and Wendi Schroeder and their two sons Joshua (1 yr.) and Moses (1 mo.) are new missionaries with Lutheran Bible Translators. Currently they are traveling the United States preparing to go to Ogoja region in Cross River state in Nigeria for a 10-15 year assignment assisting the Mbe in translating the New Testament and portions of the Old Testament into their language. Paul and Wendi both grew up in Indiana, but went to college and received their B.A. degrees at Concordia University Wisconsin. They were married shortly after Paul graduated from Concordia in May 2004 and lived in Milwaukee for one year. In July 2005 they moved to Dallas, TX for one year to begin training for Bible translation work at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics. Currently Paul has received a Certificate in Applied Linguistics and is working on his master’s degree in Applied Linguistics. There are an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 speakers of the Mbe language. The Mbe are largely Catholic with a Lutheran and Assemblies of God presence, but their church is conducted in English, so most of the congregations depend on an interpreter. The Mbe greatly desire to have the Bible in their language. The Schroeders plan to leave for Nigeria in July 2007. Until then they are encouraging the church in the Midwest United States in the LORD, and inviting congregations, groups, and individuals to partner with them in this work. It is true in America, in Nigeria, and all over the world that, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” –Dt. 8:3. As foretold in Amos 8:11-14 people are dying never to rise again because of a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
