Rejoinder: Hefty Salaries For Kenyan Politicians - Prof. Sir Abukuse V.E.P. Mbirika ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 )
After reflecting on your article published on Masterweb and East African Standard, I almost asked myself, how an entire population of Kenya managed to be conned into electing to parliament, kleptomaniac con-men and women and an entire horde of parasitic thieves. Could it be that, the country has voters who happen to be brain dead? And if a majority of people have been brain dead since independence, who is responsible for planning that? Could it be partially our former colonizers who specialized in compulsory miseducation and left a legacy of defective education? I do not entirely blame the British for leaving behind a rotten system of education which encourages gluttony for oneself. American system of education isn't any better either. Aside from all excuses, I see no nobility in any system of education that encourages competition in riches, especially when it emphasizes accumulation of material things as a status symbol. That is the problem in Kenya, Nigeria and in several other African villages. The late Samuel K. Doe of Liberia, whom I knew very well, decided to shoot all President Tolbert's ministers with a view to eliminating corruption, nepotism and kleptomaniac habits, but a few years along the road, he was himself doing the same thing he had killed all former ministers for. So, change of government and change of a new set of people, did not at all solve the problem. Liberia after Samuel K. Doe became even worse with the entry of Charles Taylor as the new parasitic thief. As though it was a spreading cancer, several other countries in Africa, including Mobutu's Zaire, became infected. As a disgusted Kenyan who has seen all, though I spend much of my time in the USA, looking for my own "King Solomon's mines," rather than joining our sickening parasitic light-fingered MPs, I strongly believe, the quickest cure is to educate our people how to be wise voters and educate those voted in parliament, a few forgotten disciplines, such as, integrity, credibility, accountability, honesty and transparency. I personally wouldn't mind teaching this kind of mind changing knowledge to our people, all free or at a salary far less than what Justice Ringera is paid for running after flies and ignoring crocodiles. Sorry, Justice Ringera, if you happen to read this, I am not at all after your bread. My cup so far, runneth over. In any event, thanks for raising this issue to the consciousness of a few of us who are as yet brain dead.

The United Nations Children Education Fund (Unicef) says over 20,000 children in the region are malnourished or at serious risk of suffering from the condition. Northern Kenya's unprecedented drought and emergency situation continue presently and unfortunately is not only affecting Kenya but also the entire belt of East, South and the Horn of Africa. *Article Reason For Rejoinder Above is Published Below
Hefty Salaries For Kenyan Politicians
Britain is the fourth largest economy in the world. It had an annual GDP per capita in 2005 of $30,900 in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms. Kenya is one of the poorest countries on earth. In the same year, it had an annual GDP per capita of $1,200 in PPP terms. Britain pays its Prime Minister Sh22 million per year. Kenya pays the Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (Kacc) Sh30 million per year. And we pay our President Sh24 million per year. Kenyan ministers, their assistants and MPs, are among the highest paid anywhere in the world.
All this is happening even as we beg for money from other nations and our people die from hunger, HIV/Aids and widespread poverty. The people who really by.......
