Omoyele & the Gov. Kalu saga - This too shall pass By O. Mbonu, Maryland, USA (Monday, March 21, 2005)
The past few weeks have been rife with speculations bordering on Governor Orji Kalu’s purported interview, as granted to Sowore Omoyele, and reported through the Internet medium. The fact that this interview was reported initially through the Internet, outside the auspices of any credible media organization, underscores its potential lack of serious journalistic pedigree, since any charlatan with access to a modem can release any information through the media. In his article, Sowore Omoyele stated that he “was not doing the interview as a journalist…” thereby calling into question his outright ability to adhere to universal journalistic principles and integrity, especially regarding the standards of truth, veracity, and integrity. Consequently, the foundation for this interview screams with potentials for acrimony, bias, and falsehood. If Sowore Omoyele was not reporting his purported interview for any media organization, then what is his motive in conducting this purported interview? Indeed is Sowore Omoyele a rebel without a cause, or is he possibly in pursuit of something far more sinister, like using the free medium of the Internet, to portray his own personal understanding, or lack of understanding, of a public official such as Governor Kalu, through their statements or misstatements, on any relevant or irrelevant issues. Sowore Omoyele stated that Governor Kalu told him in a subsequent follow up interview in Nigeria that “as a Christian I will never call anyone a killer…and I just can’t remember saying such things.” This statements of outright denial from Governor Kalu, certainly amount to a clear repudiation on the part of Governor Kalu, to the attributed statements. Without any contrary corroboration from Sowore Omoyele, then Governor Kalu’s repudiation must stand, and they must be seen as a clear attestation to the truth. To date, Sowore Omoyele has refused to provide a recording of this purported interview, in-fact there is obviously no recording of such an interview, as Sowore Omoyele would have needed to obtain permission from Governor Kalu in order to proceed to record a telephone interview under the laws of Maryland.
Finally, this purported interview must be seen as an attempt by a wannabe journalist of questionable intent, to malign a public official. Omoyele’s obvious misinterpretation of certain statements attributed to Governor Kalu, knowingly or unknowingly must be seen as such, a misinterpretation. We must see its consequences exactly as it is, a fallacy, and a lackluster attempt to malign Governor Kalu. Enough said.
