On my way to cover an event in Houston, I saw an American just standing and staring in the direction I was about to go. I thought something that required my urgent understanding was happening in the vicinity or building I was going to. In order not to walk into an uncomfortable situation, I stopped and asked the American whether anything wrong had happened in the direction she was monitoring. She said, "something different is happening over there in that hotel, great colors, I guess they are Africans or so." I told her she was right about the people in the colors and that I was a reporter on my way to cover what they were gathering for. She asked me if that was the way all Africans dressed in Africa. I told her that some dressed that way and some western, but that the general outlook was African as some of those in western attire have something African for example hats, or head ties augmenting their dressing. She said she would arrange for a vacation in Africa, to see the wonderful place and beautiful people. It was just the visit of one man, the action governor, Orji Uzor Kalu that transgressed this scene, gesture, question, remarks, compliments, and prospective African tourism and adventure. Masterweb news team was there Saturday, April 23, to cover the maiden event at Hilton Houston SW. Nigerians and her friends on this day gathered to give their support and pre-election vote for Governor Kalu. Two nine foot Nigerian and American flags graced the stage ; U.S. to the left and Nigerian flag to the right. The Nigerian flag had swirling around it several green and while balloons. It was a wonderful blend of Nigerian and American colors, the interior decorator was well chosen. A banner with the inscription, "Orji Uzor Kalu For President 2007" pinned to the ceiling, towered above the flags and balloons. The selections, arrangement and atmosphere created an admirable political theatre and euphoria. Political charisma, call it political jinx or 'poli-electromagnetism', yes, the hall beamed with jammed human vocals. The hall was full to capacity with voices at different pitches, tones and frequencies resonating Nigerian dreams for 2007. At 8.35 pm the crowd shifted as the action governor narrowly made his way to the high table at the stage already sitting several prominent dignitaries. These dignitaries included, U.S. congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, former president, World Council of Mayors, Gary Loster and former mayor of Detroit, Senator Musa Adele. A beautiful voice rang out at 8.43 pm as silence fell for the singing of the Nigerian anthem by Miss Ngozi Ashibuogwu. An opening prayer by Rev. Chris Nwachukwu followed. Different speakers took their turns lamenting on the need for Nigerians to rally behind Kalu for a great Nigeria by voting for him in 2007. The song "Do not stop thinking about tomorrow" by Fleetwood Mac was played intermittently as the speakers spoke. Chief Daudu Saidu Nda Ugonoh, Santuraki of Ebiraland, and 2007 gubernatorial candidate for Kogi State, spoke in English as with other speakers, but ended in Hausa. Chief Ugonoh concluded his speech with, "Allah yeshi karamaka dowkaka", which means in English, "may God Almighty elevate you." The guest of honor, Governor Kalu took the stage at 10.15, thanking the audience for the honor and opportunity to address them. He introduced the dignitaries on the high table and spoke eloquently about his agenda for Nigeria if elected. He gave the theme for the night as "dream". The action governor revealed to the crowd how his dreams came true in the past. He said he dreamt of the end of apartheid, African unity and democracy in Nigeria, all of each came true not too long after each dream. Kalu said the problem now with the Nigerian polity is the efficiency of her democracy. He promised to strengthen this as president of Nigeria, winning the admiration of the crowd when he added; "looking at me one will see the face of a true Nigerian." The Nigerian pillar of sports, as Governor Kalu is also honored, stressed the point that Nigerians would witness an efficient president with him leading the country. The great pillar reiterated his stand for a prosperous Nigeria, adding that "politics without economy is no politics". "Nigerians will for the first time have an economic agenda prepared by Nigerians for Nigeria and executed by Nigeria," Kalu proudly told the mammoth crowd. He said he would go to other nations and entities such as U.S., Europe and world bank and cut deals for the country. Kalu said that his administration if elected will use census figures for economic planning rather than political maneuver and divisiveness. Kalu said that when he went to countries such as South Africa, Togo, Ghana, among others he cried. He would shed tears for Nigeria because these countries that Nigeria was supposed to be better than have efficient power supply, Kalu explained. He said Ghana recently celebrated three years of uninterrupted power supply. Kalu promised to run a transparent government, and reinforced this with the fact he was the first public servant to declare his asset in 1999. He enumerated several leadership positions dating back to his days in high school qualifying him for the number one position in the country. At Government College Umuahia, he was the labor captain, one of the highest posts a student could attain. The labor captain was one of the school prefects. The action governor said that the people's agenda was his agenda, calling on Nigerians to submit to his campaign, memoranda for the consolidation and drafting of his final agenda. He described this as his "contract with the people". Kalu said this contract involves partnership with the people including the poor masses, and that his government would enable the emergence of a middle class. He explained such partnership would generate employment and industrialization. Kalu called on all in attendance to go home and draft proposals in fulfillment for his call for memoranda. He described his campaign as God's movement, ending his speech at 11.15 pm with, "Glory be to God."
It was another round of successful outing for the action governor.
