Charles Taylor's Farm Scrapped - Steve V. Jarvey ( Monday, December 19, 2005 )
Remnants of metal scraps abandoned on the farm of former president Charles Taylor in the town of Melekie, Bong County, are being illegally stock-piled and taken away on a daily basis by encroachers. According to corroborated reports gathered in Gbarnga, unknown people drive private trucks and trailers to the farm of the former president and remove the properties left over there. Reports indicate that a huge stockpile of metal scraps have been illegally extracted from the motor pool section of the farm which contains the relics of yellow machines and equipment such as motor graders, caterpillar parts, farm trucks, bulldozers and tractor parts, among others. Former president Taylor's farm at Melekie which was previously branded as 'Yassah Integrated Farms, Inc.', is now abandoned and has overgrown with thick bushes, thus giving rise to unprecedented wave of looting. Besides, other components of the farm's machinery, including a large power generator which supplied current to the facilities, lights and wires along with the poles have all disappeared while the large warehouses and housing units now lie in ruins. Reports also indicate that besides the people who are taking trucks to the farm, other individuals from Gbarnga and other towns and villages near Melekie are involved in the widespread looting. These individuals, it was gathered, obtain huge contracts with unnamed NGOs to produce large quantities of farming implements, while others collect the metal scraps for metal works and black smiting. Former president Taylor, now in exile in Nigeria after he came under heavy military pressure from rival militias, abandoned his farm in the first half of 2003 when his forces were dislodged from central Liberia, prompting farm workers and authorities to flee for their lives. When contacted for comments, the Bong County authorities refused to speak on the matter.
